- A check that is issued by a bank on its own funds for the amount paid to the bank by the buyer; it has a named payee and states the name of the buyer (the remitter). To the recipient, the check is the same as cash because it is guaranteed by the bank and does not depend on the account of a private individual or business. Such checks are often used when payment must be credited immediately upon receipt, as in real estate transactions or tax payments.
